Titone: More autism funding needed in SI

via the SI Advance;

State Senate hopeful Matthew Titone called yesterday for more autism funding on Staten Island and touted the importance of the Institute for Basic Research while standing outside the Willowbrook facility.

"We need more funding for contract schools for our kids for autism," said Titone, son of late Judge Vito Titone. "We need more, to expand not only enrollment for kids, but for new cases and early-intervention programs."

The facility was almost closed by GOP Gov. George Pataki in 1995 and again in 2003, when the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities contended that IBR's funding could be better utilized.

IBR has been hailed worldwide for its cutting-edge research into several neurological and mental illnesses, including autism and developmental disabilities.
